DPS Blink Industries Project: Week 3

This week, I started by focusing on what I wanted the colours to look like, both on the character and backgrounds. I made a few quick colour tests on my phone, to envision how everything would blend together. I wanted the space shown in the background to be colourful but relatively dark, contrasting the astronaut’s brighter colour scheme, mainly consisting of white.

However, when trying to recreate the background on Harmony, I had some issues. The brushes available weren’t initially giving me the effect I wanted, and I couldn’t get the stars to appear correctly. I eventually reached something I could be temporarily satisfied with, but I’ll definitely make some adjustments and improvements before the deadline: the lack of stars and planets is making it look too empty, at the moment.

The current state of my animation’s background (taller than it is wide, because of the panning shot at the end).

Next, I started experimenting with my protagonist’s design and colours. I knew I wanted his body to look like a spacesuit, so I tried a few different approaches: a sci-fi outfit, some toy-like costumes, and even one suit that used the colours of BlinkInk’s crocodile-dog logo. In the end, I settled for a simple but fun design, with light gray as the main colour, and blue and orange details throughout.

With the design finalized, I went on to do clean-ups for all the keyframes in my animatic, making sure the character stayed on-model and that all the movements made sense, the silhouettes were clear, and that everything could be animated reasonably.

I’m hoping this will help me in the coming week, when I’ll draw all the in-betweens for these frames.

I’ve now started working on the rough in-betweens, and I hope to be done with them by the end of the week. It will be a bit of a squeeze, but I still think I’ll be able to finish everything in time for the formal presentations.
